Fans waiting for an official release date for season 3 will need to continue waiting, as there has been no announcement yet. Furthermore, the anime adaptation has caught up with the manga and there is not enough source material for a third season as of now. The second season adapted up to chapter 96, completely adapting the College arc after which the manga went on a hiatus.

Fans should not be disappointed, as our analysis suggests that a third season is still a possibility. To give a potential release date we must take a look at the previous season’s release dates, adapting pace, manga’s progress, chapter count and news regarding its hiatus.

Keep on reading to know about when to expect a third season for the Ancient Magus’ Bride.

Is the Mahoutsukai no Yome Manga still on a hiatus?

The manga, written and illustrated by Kore Yamazaki was on a hiatus from March 2023 (almost the entire duration of the second season’s premiere) possibly because the author has been preparing for the next arc titled “Beast Hunting Arc“. The gap could also be due to a change in publisher for the manga’s twentieth volume from Mag Garden to Bushiroad

The manga has resumed publication from December 21st 2023 with the start of the new arc. A total of four chapters have been published with the latest entry being chapter 100 (at the time of writing this article).

Season 3 Potential Release Date –  2027

Season 2 of the anime was released in 2023, five years after season 1. Each season has adapted about 40-45 chapters. If the anime follows a similar pace, the anime might return after sufficient manga chapters (about 140) have been published. Thus, a potential release date for the anime would be 2027.

The Ancient Magus Bride Season 2 Recap

The second season picks up right after the first, and adapts “The College Arc”. Following the steps of Studio Wit, Studio Kafka does an amazing job animating Chise and Elias’ journey into the world of Magecraft.

Chise and Elias, despite being mages, are invited to join The College, a prestigious learning institution for sorcerers, providing them a good opportunity to study and hopefully find a cure to remove the Dragon and Immortality Curse. Chise accepts the proposal and attends the college where she is able to interact with people her age.

The show develops new characters notably Lucy, Philomela, Zoe, Issac, and Liam, each of whom are exceptionally fleshed out and well-written. The story takes a dark turn when a mysterious attacker started stealing magical energy from the students of the College for a mysterious and nefarious purpose. Chise receives the daunting task of figuring out who among her friends is the attacker and why they were doing something so cruel.

The show progresses in a completely different direction than season 1, which focuses more on Chise and Elias’ relationship. This time we get to see how much Chise and Elias have grown when they interact with the new characters. The interactions between the cast feel genuine and nuanced painting a more vivid picture of the characters and the world.

Despite receiving criticism for its slower pacing, limited action and concerns about Chise and Elias’ toxic relationship, The Ancient Magus’ Bride has managed to amass a loyal fanbase. The series stands out in the fantasy genre with its detailed character development and engaging storytelling paired with the gorgeous animation done by Studio Wit (Season 1) and Studio Kafka (Season 2).

While, there is no official release date, a season 3 is well within the boundaries of reason. Fans might have to wait a little longer, potentially till 2027, as more chapters release for adaptation. Till, then viewers can catch up on existing episodes and OVAs available on Crunchyroll!!
