Bucchigiri?!, a new MAPPA-produced original anime, dropped its teaser trailer and was announced at the MAPPA Stage 2023 event on May 21, scheduled to premiere in January 2024. Predominantly in the anime world, many of the successful series can trace their roots back to publishers such as Shonen Jump, Kodansha, Young Animal, and more in Japan, which makes an original work even more anticipated since we will have no idea of its story arc.
MAPPA is taking the opportunity to create this new original anime with director Hiroko Utsumi, who fans might know best for their work on Banana Fish, and SK8 Infinity. He will be joined by screenwriter Taku Kishimoto, perhaps best known for anime including Fruits Basket, and Haikyuu.

The teaser trailer sees protagonist Arajin Tomoshibi getting caught in a battle between powerful combatants after a reunion with his former best friend. What is MAPPA’s Bucchigiri?! all about?
The teaser visual and trailer reveal a somber and rough theme, with a cast of delinquents sporting tattoos, piercings, and scars. The protagonist is portrayed as a timid and ordinary high school student who reunites with his childhood friend Mataka Asamine, who is now the charismatic and feared leader of the gang, Bucchigiri.
Asamine invites Tombishi to join his group and fight against other gangs who are vying for supremacy in the city. However, the latter soon realizes that he has bitten off more than he can chew, as he faces deadly enemies and a mysterious threat that looms over all of them.
Based on the character designs, many fans have speculated that this anime seems like a cross between Tokyo Revengers and Jojo, containing the same amount of deadlines and flamboyant style.
