Chainsaw Man Analysing Makima, how strong is she

Makima is one of the lead antagonists of Chainsaw Man. Analysing Makima, therefore, requires a break away from the traditional notions set by this character. While she is shown as a Public Safety Officer under the Japanese Government, we need to analyze Makima based on her motives, ideals, and strength.

In this article, we will focus on analyzing Makima from Chainsaw Man and also look at how her strengths and motives became major tropes of the story.

Makima: How did the character introduce itself?

  • Makima was introduced as a character who had the ambition to release humanity from the shackles of the Gun Devil. She was an officer under the Japanese Government and was later known as the Control Devil. She is an agent of change, as her character describes, and she is constantly trying to involve Denji in her aspirational journey. Therefore, it is through manipulation that we are first introduced to Makima’s character.
  • Analysing Makima therefore requires a footnote on how to place her character, as a manipulative protagonist or a selfish antagonist. Makima is also one of those characters who are introduced to the audience through multiple layers of mystery. This is a major trope of Chainsaw Man, as most characters are kept as a mystery and most narratives are halfway revealed.

Makima, also known as the Control Devil, is one of the strongest characters in Chainsaw Man. It is because of her physical prowess and her abilities as a Devil that she nearly becomes invincible. Makima also possesses enhanced smell, through which she differentiates each individual, whether human, devil, or fiend.

  • When we talk about her supernatural abilities, Makima possesses the power of domination. She can dominate and manipulate anybody according to her will, and consume her victims to possess their powers.
  • She also has the ability of force manipulation, which helps her to crush anybody using a field of force which can even be used over long distances.
  • Apart from these, Makima also controls her victims through her intelligence, as she is always one step ahead and properly plans everything out. Analysing Makima, therefore, requires a plethora of images, some of which might even be insane.

  • Makima is first shown as a character who cares about humankind and trades sexual favors with Denji to get his help in acquiring information about the Gun Devil. But gradually, her nature is revealed and she turns out to be one of the major antagonists of the show. Makima doesn’t care about anybody other than herself and the fulfillment of her desires. Due to her nature as a Devil, she is in a constant quest for power.
  • But a part of her also loves Pochita, due to which she tries to manipulate Denji into giving up Pochita so that she can spend a life with him.

Conclusion

Makima knows that she is cold and cunning, but she also states that she is a ‘necessary evil’, but her ultimate goal was to feel something human, something that her reality as the Control Devil, or a devil in general, didn’t allow. Analysing Makima, therefore, requires the knowledge of her actions and intentions, and how these actions truly shape the narrative of Chainsaw Man.
