JJK 259 Spoilers: Why Choso’s death was meaningless and Gege is likely running out of ideas

Choso and Yuji's battle in Jujutsu Kaisen anime

Choso’s death in Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 259 marks another meaningless plot twist in the series. While the story has already placed Sukuna above all others, it has also managed to uphold this status quo by eliminating any form of challenge that arises in any manner. While death should also remain an unfathomable experience in any story, JJK 259 proved that the story has now made it ‘predictable’.

While many claim that Choso’s death was indeed anticipated and it fits well with the narrative as well as his character, it is absurd and imprudent to take such an approach. While goals do define characters and sacrifice becomes a major characteristic feature of these goals, it is insensitive to think that sacrifice and death are congruous at all.

Choso’s death in JJK 259 shows that Gege is out of ideas – and here’s how

As Jujutsu Kaisen slides its narrative towards another death, it is actually sad to see how the readers have stopped hoping for a climax. The story is so fragmented at this point, that any buildup is simply domesticated with a pointless death. It might serve Sukuna’s ego pretty well, but it ‘kills the buzz’ and calls for a ‘big yikes’.

Gege Akutami is simply running out of ideas for Jujutsu Kaisen. Ever since Gojo’s death, many came across the theory that Gege never liked Gojo in the first place and that his death was indeed predestined. However, if Gege never liked Gojo at all then why has he not moved on from Gojo yet? There seems to be a nostalgic revisit of Gojo in every chapter and it shows how the mangaka is clueless about the story ever since Gojo died.

Choso as a symbol in Jujutsu Kaisen

If we look at Choso’s life during the story of Jujutsu Kaisen, we will realize that he lived for his brothers connected by the Death Painting Wombs. These cursed wombs could sense each other’s sorrows and pain, and they were inherently one soul in different bodies, at least that’s what they implied given that they were creations of Kenjaku himself.

It is also true that Choso stood as a symbol. He was meant to be an avenger for the death of his brothers. He was also meant and destined to protect his siblings at all costs. However, the transformation in his character throughout the series was very crucial to the symbolism of his ideals.

His ideals of love and family were very real and human. He stood for the cause of the human and embraced human sentiments. Choso symbolized hope and with his death we witness its perishable nature, the feeble foundation of hope in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Choso’s death and JJK’s characterization

Many claim that Choso’s death was indeed fitting for his character. They believe that his end was what his character stood for. If that’s the case, then Gojo should’ve never died in the first place. That man was never concerned about anybody else and he fought the battle against Sukuna for himself. If Gege Akutami is so good at giving fitting ends to his characters, then the plot would’ve never embarked on this muddy path.

What many fail to understand is that death has become a very repetitive event in the story. Some claim without a thought that Choso had a satisfying conclusion. I wonder which part of the entirety of JJK 259 spoilers was satisfying for this claim to exist. Choso chose his brother Yuji over himself, but at this point, even Yuji’s character is an unfamiliar one in the plot.

For someone like Choso who prioritized his siblings over everybody else, the claims surrounding his ‘fitting end‘ are so obnoxious that it’s laughable. We have come to a point where it is hard to imagine Jujutsu Kaisen without sudden, unforeseen, and poorly orchestrated deaths.

Aoi Todo is likely next in line

Recently, I came across a statement claiming that Choso received a good farewell. He got enough panels and time throughout Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 259, and that it is a suitable end compared to other characters.

Refuting this point is one thing, but then jumps in Aoi Todo while Choso’s ashes still haven’t dispersed properly, so I guess my point is made. It is the same cycle all over again, one character dies – another enters – a futile battle ensues – Yuji manages to land a punch or two – and the new character is represented on par with Sukuna – and dies miserably (and suddenly).

So, I guess Aoi Todo will also perish the same way, another pointless sacrifice followed by another one of Sukuna’s powerups. One might as well start rooting for Sukuna because he is surely going to win looking at how the story is progressing.

Final thoughts on JJK 259 spoilers and Choso’s death

JJK 259 was one of the most heartbreaking chapters after Gojo’s death. Characters like Choso deserve a more suitable story for themselves. Apart from Yuji and Yuta, everyone else in the plot seems to be a victim of some sort of grand experiment, where Sukuna is the poison and everyone else are mere lab rats to be fiddled with. The story at this point is not only polarized but also biased, with Sukuna having the advantage of Gege’s imagination.
