How has Berserk of Gluttony fared against initial expectations?

Berserk of Gluttony

Berserk of Gluttony has received its much-needed anime adaptation but has the adaptation lived up to the expectations we have had of it? The manga is a wonderful tale about the journey of Fate Griffith’s rise to power and his attempts to protect those he cherishes. Endowed with a well-grounded plot, what has it become? Will it be a standard for adaptations to live up to or is it another addition to the long list of sub-par adaptations?

Berserk of Gluttony – What were Initial Expectations?

The show was announced in October 2022 and information like cast and teaser videos were dropped from March 2023. The show was gaining hype with its iconic/eccentric name and the unique skill mechanic it brought to the viewers. The character is shown as despicable as one could be, and then is followed with his awakening which leads him to grow stronger along the way. The Classic hero route of our times, but with a little twist.

Unlike usual shows or manga where the hero clears dungeons gets skill points and is strategic of his progress, here the hero outright steals stats from those he defeats. A morally questionable way to go about strength, yet an effective venture if one tries to. With such a peculiar way to go about gaining strength, the show quickly caught our eyes and those of the community.

What anime did better than its source material?

The anime did certain things better than its source material, besides the fact that it brought our favorite characters alive. The characters were lively and we received some scenes that were not in the manga. These scenes filled up the gaps of mysteries in the manga.

Fate and Roxy

  • Fate and Roxy’s relationship felt more genuine than something that formed out of pity. The characters truly felt like friends, that the manga could not convey.
Rafale

  • The twist to Memil and Rafale’s relationship feels more natural with the extra scene of Rafale and Memil interacting. Their closeness was never shown in the manga, leaving the twist at the end somewhat not so great.
Greed teasing them

  • Greed’s interaction with Fate gives us a much better insight into his personality, which will make later appearances something normal. This was something that was missing in the manga.

Is it a successful adaptation?

The only upper hand that the manga has over the anime is its beautifully drawn transformation and fight scenes. While the show has only 3 episodes, the fight scenes so far have been lackluster. It was done a tremendously good work with the plot and the characters, yet the main highlight of the series seems to falter.

As amazing as the series has been so far, the adaptation will fail if it does not raise the standard of fight scenes it has kept till now. With shows like Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen, who have been ruling the fight section of the industry, Berserk of Gluttony will have to do much better to utilize its unique plot point to its full potential.

The adaptation hasn’t been the best yet, but it has far surpassed the standards and quality of a sub-par adaptation. The expectations have diminished a little but the show can still make a come-back that everyone is hoping for.
