  • Nanami’s death was not only a tragic loss in the series but it holds much more significance than that. His death was filled with a lot of contentment and at the same time, it will act as a catalyst that will fuel other sorcerers in the Shibuya battle.
  • His death will be marked as a source of accumulating inspiration, and the idea of revenge plays a central narrative motif in this regard.
  • Itadori is one among the many sorcerers who will be seeking revenge, and the rage will act as gasoline in this fiery clash with Mahito.

Was Nanami’s death necessary in Jujutsu Kaisen episode 42?

Nanami Kento was a central character in Jujutsu Kaisen. Apart from the good looks and attractive demeanor, he was also a strong sorcerer and one of the very few who held a special position in the nurturing process of the junior sorcerers and the students. His battle in the Shibuya arc came at a cost he was not ready to pay, and it makes us wonder about his decision to join the Jujutsu sorcerers despite his retirement.

To speak very frankly, Nanami’s death was not a necessary event in Jujutsu Kaisen. It was true that he did not hold much significance in future battles, but Jujutsu Kaisen as a story could’ve been considerate and kind to Nanami. The way he died was gruesome, and it was simply an act of satisfying Mahito’s ego. It is true that the story explores very dark and emotionally unstable elements to facilitate the narrative, but it seems like ambition is often seen as another curse in Jujutsu Kaisen.

The idea of ambition and why it is a curse in Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen treats a lot of emotional fragments and dispositions as curses. All human emotions that are on the spectrum might result in some form of unsatisfied and unfulfilled desire, and therefore ambition among all others is often seen as a threat. Nanami was one such ambitious character, and so were Gojo, Yuji, Nobara, Megumi, Mechamaru, Maki, Mei Mei, and all others we know of.

Therefore, the idea of death is closely associated with these characters and why their actions and their consequences are deemed so unpredictable in the story.

  • One might question why are cursed spirits not on this spectrum which claims ambition is a curse.
  • The thing with cursed spirits is they are already born out of such human inconsistencies.
  • The fact that they are ambitious further acknowledges their existence and helps them sustain themselves in this world.

This makes their existence and human existence completely different events altogether, both of which operate in a very condescending manner. Ambitious humans are therefore easily killed and disposed of, while ambitious cursed spirits rise the ladder quicker than others.

We can take the example of Geto in this case. Suguru Geto was an ambitious human being but he was defeated by Yuta in their duel. On the other hand, while he was taken over by Kenjaku, he and his plans flourished and he was able to seal Gojo Satoru. The narrative always takes the side of those on the evil side because that just makes the idea of righteousness more rigid on the human side.

Jujutsu Kaisen episode 42 explores ambition as a curse and human freedom as a myth. It further ascertains the fact that one can only attain freedom if one escapes the clutches of life itself. Therefore, Nanami’s ambition took him to his grave while Mahito and Kenjaku could easily flourish and even trap Gojo Satoru while they were at it.
