Miyo Saimori is the protagonist of the novel and anime series My Happy Marriage. She is a young woman with the supernatural ability of Dream Sight. Dream Sight allows her to enter the dreams of others and manipulate their thoughts and emotions. Miyo can also see into the past and future, and even alter them through her dreams.
However, Miyo’s powers are sealed by her mother when she is a child, in order to protect her from those who would exploit her. As a result, Miyo grows up believing that she is powerless. It is only after she marries Kiyoka Kudou, the head of the Kudou family, that Miyo begins to awaken her powers.
Inheritance of Usuba Powers in My Happy Marriage
Miyo was born from a loveless marriage between Shinichi Saimori and Sumi Usuba that was arranged by their families to improve the bloodline. Her father opposed to the marriage but was forced by his family to break off his relationship with his lover Kanoko, who came from a regular family with no special powers. Miyo is told that her father used to dote on her and that she was the apple of her mother’s eye.
To prevent people from taking advantage of Miyo’s Gift of Dream-Sight, her mother secretly sealed Miyo’s Dream-Sight power, soon after she was born. When her father discovered that Miyo couldn’t demonstrate the Spirit-Sight ability, he was under the impression that she was Giftless and resented her for it. He’d felt bitter dejection when the child of the woman he’d been forced to marry in spite of his love for another hadn’t fulfilled the familial expectation of inheriting the Gift.
The Awakening of Dream-Sight
Miyo possesses a special Usuba Gift called Dream-Sight. Like the rest of the Usuba powers, the ability is foremost unique in that it specializes in dealing with Gift-users, rather than with the likes of Grotesqueries, and is focused on affecting people’s minds. With this ability, she can enter the dreams of any sleeping person, including her own, and manipulate their vision.
It also allows her to see into the past and future and even alter it through her dreams and is widely regarded as the most powerful Gift. As her Gift is sealed by her mother Sumi for fear that she would get exploited, Miyo grows up believing she is Giftless and is consequently mistreated by her family. After the seal gradually weakened after she left the Saimori estate, her ability awakened.
Uncovering the Truth and Breaking the Seal
Kiyoka finds out that Miyo’s maternal family, the Usuba family conceals themselves under the pseudonym “Tsuruki”. In an effort to mend their strained relationship, Kiyoka takes Miyo to the Usuba estate, where she learns about the sealed power of her Dream Sight. Confronted with a choice between Kiyoka and the Usuba family, Miyo is compelled to accept the protection of the Usuba family, temporarily parting ways with Kiyoka.
After talking with Arata and her grandfather Yoshirou Usuba, Miyo learns about the plight of the Usuba family and her mother’s past. A few days later, Miyo hears from Arata that Kiyoka has fallen into a coma. Anxious for his well-being, Miyo expresses her concerns to Arata and finally gets his support. Together, they travel to the Kudou Residence, and under Arata’s guidance, she uses her Dream-Sight to enter Kiyoka’s spiritual realm. There, she rescues Kiyoka from the torment of the resentful spirits. Before returning to the waking world, Miyo and Kiyoka engage in a heartfelt exchange, bridging the gap of misunderstanding between them.
Conclusion
Breaking the seal and the unspoken curse of carrying the Dream Sight powers, Miyo is shaping a new world for the future of the Usuba family. Each day that she refines her powers brings her closer to securing a future where no child will be judged based on their powers.
