When a World Noble is punched by Luffy, Admiral Kizaru brings the full force of the Marines down on the Sabaody Archipelago where the Straw Hats are docked. Caught completely off guard, the scattered Straw Hats face certain doom against the light-powered Admiral and an army of Pacifista. Only Silvers Rayleigh’s intervention saves them from being annihilated.

4. Luffy vs Crocodile in Alabasta

The first major threat the Straw Hats face in the Grand Line proves nearly fatal. Crocodile’s scheme to destroy Alabasta seems poised to succeed until Luffy confronts the Warlord. At this point, Luffy had never encountered any Logia-type adversaries and had no grasp of the concept of Haki. After an arduous battle, Luffy emerges victorious but is left paralyzed by Crocodile’s poison hook. Only Robin’s antidote saves Luffy in time.

Enies Lobby ranks among the most perilous ordeals the Straw Hats have undertaken. Despite triumphing over CP9, they become trapped when the Navy unleashes their devastating Buster Call on the island. With nowhere to run from the onslaught, the crew barely escapes annihilation thanks to some quick thinking from Nami.

2. Straw Hats vs Kuma

Bartholomew Kuma’s sudden assault on Thriller Bark pushes the already exhausted Straw Hats to their absolute limit. Their valiant last stand ultimately fails against Kuma’s paw-paw powers, but salvation comes when Zoro agrees to absorb all of Luffy’s pain and fatigue. This sacrifice nearly kills Zoro but saves the crew.

After easily defeating the Straw Hats, Aokiji reveals he’s letting them go out of mercy. But when Luffy angrily attacks him, Aokiji decides to kill him instead. He impales Luffy in the chest with an ice spear, leaving him mortally wounded.

Only Aokiji’s whim ultimately spares Luffy from an icy grave. No other encounter cut so close. Aokiji’s sheer dominance over the Straw Hats pushed Luffy to develop his Gear Second, enabling him to reach a whole new realm of power.
