Tokyo Revengers is a popular action manga series by Ken Wakui. The story follows Takemichi Hanagaki, a delinquent who is given the chance to travel back in time and change the past. Takemichi’s mission is to save his ex-girlfriend, Hina Tachibana, and prevent her from being killed by the Tokyo Manji Gang (Toman).
One of the most important mysteries in Tokyo Revengers is the identity of the traitor within Toman, now Tokyo Revengers Season 3 Episode 1 also caught up with this mystery by revealing the existence of a traitor inside the Tokyo Manji gang.
For a long time, Takemichi suspects that the traitor is one of his close friends, such as Kisaki Tetta or Kazutora Hanemiya. However, it is eventually revealed in the manga that the true traitor is Yasuhiro Muto, the Fifth Division Captain of Toman.
Yasuhiro Muto or Mucho, was a Eighth Division member of the Tokyo Manji Gang. He was also a Tenjiku founding member and executive. In a previous timeline, he was the Fifth Division Captain of the Tokyo Manji Gang until his betrayal after Izana’s return.
Muto’s Betrayal in the Manga
Takemichi and the other Toman members suspect that there is a traitor within their ranks, but they cannot figure out who it is. Eventually, it is revealed that Muto is the traitor. Muto is working with Izana, the leader of Tenjiku, and he is responsible for leaking information about Toman’s plans to Valhalla. Mucho has been allied with Izana all along, as he is part of the S-62 Generation, an infamous group of delinquents who met in juvenile detention
When Takemichi asks Mucho about his motivation, Mucho explains that Toman’s Fifth Division has a unique role, serving as the “Special Task Division” which enables them to engage in infighting. Calling the Fifth Division the “Public Morality Council“, Mucho says that the Fifth Division serves to punish Toman’s traitors, even without Mikey’s permission.
Confused, Takemichi wonders if Mucho is not Tenjiku’s ally, contrary to what he suspected earlier. He asks if Mucho suspects that he is a traitor, to which Mucho merely responds that his motto is “guilty until proven innocent“. This further confuses Takemichi, who asks again whether he is a suspected traitor.
Muto’s Motives for the Betrayal in Tokyo Revengers
Mucho recalls that he and Izana committed crimes together, then formed different gangs and became known as the S-62 Generation, a powerful group of delinquents. However, Izana stopped engaging in gang activity, leaving Mikey to recruit him into Toman.
He explains to Takemichi that he is a founding member of Tenjiku. When Takemichi asks him if he is betraying Mikey and Toman, Mucho explains that his loyalty to Izana takes priority. Therefore, Takemichi, Inupi, and Kokonoi are all his enemies.
Regardless of his reasons, Muto’s betrayal is a major turning point in the Tokyo Revengers story. It leads to the deaths of several Toman members, and it forces Takemichi to confront his weaknesses.
