Nanami Kento is one of the most popular characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe who is admired by the whole fandom for his brazen personality. Nanami’s character has a complicated backstory which also explains his blunt nature and his indifference.

Nanami Kento and his journey as a Sorcerer

Nanami Kento was a former student at Jujutsu High and was a junior to Gojo Satoru and Geto. Upon graduating, Nanami chose to follow a different career path, working as a salaryman but eventually got bored. He also felt a sense of unending void due to him losing his friend Yu Haibara and the unprocessed trauma loomed upon him for a long time.

A few years later, Nanami quit his job and joined Jujutsu High as a Grade One Sorcerer. Later, Gojo introduced Itadori Yuji to Nanami, and he became a mentor to Yuji over time. He was a reserved yet knowledgeable man who treated Yuji as if he were his own son. He was always direct and to the point, which meant he had little time for idealistic optimism and unnecessary interpretation.

Does Nanami die in Jujutsu Kaisen?

If this question is to be answered in a very simple way, then yes, Nanami dies in the Jujutsu Kaisen verse. Nanami’s first encounter with Mahito happened during the Young Fish and Reverse Punishment Arc and came near to death during their first meeting. During the Shibuya Incident Nanami engages in a lot of battles with different Curses and Curse-Users.

  • Nanami and the Zenins encountered Dagon, who had transformed into a full-fledged cursed spirit.
  • None of their attacks were successful against Dagon. Dagon then cast his domain expansion and began the beginning of the end.
  • When Dagon unleashed Death Swarm, one of his cursed skills, Nanami lost his left eye. Even in that state, Nanami shielded Megumi, who was attempting to breach Dagon’s domain and escape from the domain.

Later in the Shibuya Arc, Nanami is exasperated and tired while rethinking some life choices he also stumbles upon the idea of an ideal life in Malaysia. He knocks himself back to reality and goes to help Megumi and finally confronts Mahito and his transfigured humans.

Nanami was killed after a long battle since he was already injured. But he continues to fight against Mahito’s soldiers. Knowing Nanami will be unable to protect himself, Mahito appears at the last second and kills Nanami in front of Yuji.

Nanami Kento was a father figure to Itadori Yuji and his death, that too in front of him makes it too traumatizing for Yuji to process. While his death shocked the fandom, one could argue that Nanami’s death was necessary for the plot to progress. Particularly in terms of Yuji’s journey and character development.
