Will there be more Monogatari series sequels?

Monogatari anime series return as Aniplex's Next Project

The Monogatari series is a long-running anime franchise that is strictly based on the light novels written by Nisio Isin. The anime is definitively supernatural and witty, and since 2009 with the first series titled Bakemonogatari, it has grown as a large franchise with even a film series to the title. The show ended with the final epilogue titled Zoku Owarimonogotari which was 6 episodes long. However, is it possible that the Monogatari series might come with a sequel? Let’s find out!

Monogatari Series receives a further continuation with two seasons as its sequels

Zoku Owarimonogatari is the last adaptation of the Monogatari Series: Final Season. It is coined as the sixth and final volume of the show and it explores the bizarre reality of Araragi’s life and his counterpart’s dimension. While it was considered to be the end of the series, fans are delighted to find two new spin-off seasons for the franchise, as Aniplex picks up its next project.

The series is strictly based on a conclusive plot that has been written by Nisio Isin and as such, the author will be a part of the staff overlooking the spin-offs. The spin-offs are “Off” and “Monster” Seasons which will include stories that were left in the light novels and parts of Koyomi’s college life, respectively.

Where do you start the Monogatari Series from?

The standard structure of the Monogatari series doesn’t follow the traditional 12 or 24 to 26 episodic structure. Instead, the entire seasons are split into mini-series that focus on various arcs, and therefore the act of keeping track becomes hectic for the viewer. However, the entire show can be clubbed into three main seasons and each season has multiple mini-series to its title.

  • The first entry of Monogatari began with Bakemonogatari (15 episodes) in which the main character Koyomi Araragi and other major characters are introduced. It introduces Koyomi as a fake vampire who finds himself engaged in the supernatural affairs of nearly everyone he meets.
  • After this comes the film series titled Kizumonogatari which is a standard trilogy of sorts. Although this came much later than the first two seasons, if one follows the light novel then the film trilogy would fall right before Bakemonogatari.

Apart from that, Nisemonogatari and Nekomonogatari(Black) are the final two series that round up the first season and are 11 episodes and 4 episodes long respectively.

The Remainder of the Series: Mini-stories and minor arcs

The second season of the Monogatari series is composed entirely of mini-series and each of them covers a different novel in the series. The overarching plotline connects everything together. The various mini-series are as follows:

  • Nekomonogatari (White)
  • Kabukimonogatari
  • Hanamonogatari
  • Otorimonigatari
  • Onimonogatari and
  • Koimonogotari.

These totally make up for 28 episodes and are confusing of sorts, as the story tends to jump back and forth between timelines.

The final season of the Monogatari series is more structured and comprises Tsukimonogatari(4 episodes), Koyomimonogatari(12 episodes), and finally Owarimonogatari which is divided into two parts and makes up 20 episodes in total. Zoku Owarimonogatari, an epilogue to Owarimonogatari, served as a definite end to the series before the announcement of the sequels.

With the upcoming two seasons, it seems “Monster” Season would be becoming the new end to the entire franchise, following Koyomi’s life in college and potentially his gradual retirement from the supernatural scene. Conclusion

The Monogatari series has created a huge franchise for itself. Among the many seasons and series that it produced, it aimed to cover and adapt all of the written material that was available. Owing to that conception, we can say that the Monogatari series will not have a sequel until any newly written material is released, of which the chances are nigh zero.
