Mitsuri uses her Love Breathing technique to great effect, and she is able to inflict significant damage on Zohakuten. However, Zohakuten is a powerful demon, and he is able to adapt to her attacks. She manages to establish her dominance and closes the distance to decapitate Zohakuten but Tanjiro informs her that beheading Zohakuten is useless as the real head of the Upper-Rank demon is elsewhere. This catches Mitsuri off guard and she narrowly misses a fatal attack. Zohakuten begins to use his various split-form abilities, which makes it difficult for Mitsuri to keep track of him.
As Tanjiro and others flee toward the deep jungle to trace Hantengu, Mitsuri continues to fight bravely. She is determined to protect Tanjiro and the others, and she will not give up without a fight. Amidst the fight, Zohakuten notices that she has a strange mark on her that was previously not there which shows us that Mitsuri has manifested her Demon Slayer mark in the heat of the moment, changing the power dynamic of the fight drastically.
Tanjiro relies on his sense of smell to trace Hantengu and they find the tree that he has been using as his hideout. They are ambushed as they try to get close to it and are attacked by whips. Tanjiro gets the feeling that the demon had foiled their plans and he was right as they see Hantengu running on the grass near the bushes.
Hot on his tail, Tanjiro and the others run after him so that they can behead him and end it all. But they soon realize that the demon has the upper hand in the fight, so Genya decides to change tactics and starts eating the demon flesh that the tree is made out of. As he succeeds in cutting the tree in half with his teeth alone, Tanjirou with Nezuko’s help manages to slice the part where Hantengu is supposedly hiding.
The episode ends with Mitsuri and Hantengu locked in a stalemate. It is clear that the battle will not be easy, but Mitsuri is confident that she can defeat Hantengu and protect her friends.
