Love has always been a feeling but A Condition Called Love manga is here to redefine it for us. The title itself leaves us curious if love is a condition, an illness, or simply just love. A Condition Called Love manga is a high school romance manga written and illustrated by Megumi Morino. While the announcement of an anime adaptation makes its way to the fans, let’s revisit what A Condition Called Love manga is all about.
A Condition Called Love: The plot
The manga revolves around 16-year-old Hotarou, who’s your typical girl next door. She sees a guy sitting in the snow and offers him an umbrella without thinking much of it. Her idea of love has been limited to her family and friends so when the guy she offered the umbrella to, Hananoi Kun confesses his love to her the next day, it takes her by surprise.
She rejects him outright but he’s all in for her getting to know her better as he gets to do the same.
Throughout the story, we see the two explore their idea of this condition called love. The art style of the manga is visually clean and beautiful. You can easily make out the details with it.
Characters in the Manga
- Hotarou Hinase is the main character, she’s sweet, easy-going, and kind-hearted. Despite that, she has strong boundaries for herself and respects them. She’s loving to those around her and is a squishy ball of everything wholesome and cute.
- Saki Hananoi is uptight about most things and doesn’t like anyone’s presence except for Hotarou. He can easily socialize if he wants to but is simply not interested in knowing anyone besides her. He’s always loving and respectful towards her, his character is one of the more interesting things about the manga.
- Asami and Shibamura are Hotarou’s friends. Asami is the friend who’s biased while Shibamura is the wise friend. The former has a very fun personality and the latter is more laid-back. The manga does a great job exploring both of these characters.
- Satomi and Yao are Hotarou and Hananoi’s colleagues at their part-time job. These two characters are significant to the drama that takes place later in the story.
There are some other characters including Hotarou’s and Hananoi’s families. All the characters are likeable and aren’t under or over-appreciated in the manga.
How’s the romance?
There’s plenty of romance in the manga, which is given as it’s a romance manga. It starts fairly early but doesn’t feel unnatural. The characters comfortably fall in love. The romance is on the innocent side of things, and a bit wrapped up in teenage drama, given the set-up is in high school.
There’s a scene where you see Hotarou do something for Hananoi and he drops his chopsticks and turns bright red. The scene is extremely wholesome. If you’re into more adult-like romance, A Condition Called Love probably isn’t “it” for you.
Romance is always in the air, and when it’s not we have romance manga and anime to make up for the absence. In case you’re looking for a good high school romance, A Condition Called Love manga is what you’re looking for. With the anime just around the corner, you can do some preparation with the manga and get used to the character, and see them come to life with the anime in 2024.
