Overlord is an action-adventure fantasy anime that took the community for a spin. It has a very cliche premise, but that is just a ruse. It turns out to be a developing story with fun gimmicks throughout. The series has some of the most iconic anime characters in the community. One such character is Albedo, and what makes her so iconic is her loyalty towards Ainz. In this article, we will unveil why Albedo’s loyalty toward Ainz is so strong.

Who is Albedo?

Albedo is the Overseer of the Guardians of the Tomb of Nazarick. She is the manager of the 7 Floor Guardians and supervises any actions by them. She ranks the highest among all the NPCs in the Tomb of Nazarick. She maintains a high dignity and prestige, mostly due to the demands of her position.

While she ranks the highest among all, she is not omnicompetent. In pure intelligence and strategic comprehension of situations, Demiurge is superior. Similarly, in fighting capabilities, Shalltear is stronger than her. Having said this, nobody can compare when it comes to her impeccable administrative abilities. However, it would be an understatement to call her weak.

  • Superhuman Strength: She has tremendous physical ability and strength, rivalling that of Cocytus and Sebas Tian. She was even able to overpower Ainz in a certain “situation”.
  • Superhuman Durability: Despite her appearance, she has the highest defensive stat in the Tomb of Nazarick.
  • Superhuman Speed: She can move at high speed, as shown while defending Ainz from projectiles.
  • Magic: She has good control over magic. Her magic spells range from boosting defences to granting immunity to all diseases.
  • Axemanship: Her armour, Hermes Trismegistus, provides full-body armour along with a powerful axe.

Albedo is extremely in love with Ainz. She is head-over-heels for him, to the point that her infatuation has turned into an obsession. She is overly jealous and possessive of him, showcasing outbursts of jealousy whenever somebody appears to be getting close to him. Despite this, she is willing for him to have multiple wives as long as she’s the one he loves the most. Yes exactly, she is very weird.

Even with her eccentric behavior, she has all the qualities that there needs to be to become Ainz’s partner. She is level-headed and provides calm, collected judgments that sometimes Ainz cannot come up with. Her utmost devotion and loyalty make her intolerable to insubordination of any kind from the Guardians toward Ainz. She becomes crazy and goes into a frenzy when Ainz is in danger, making her lose her self-restraint. Ainz is her number 1 priority, undeniably so.

But why though?

Okay, storytime. When Ainz got the information that the servers of Yggdrasil were being shut down, he visited Nazarick for one last time. He goes through the tomb, reminiscing his memories with his friends. He sits at the throne for one last time. Before the servers close, he changes Albedo’s settings as a joke. He changes it to make her indomitably in love with him.

So, when the servers did not shut down but instead the world of Yggdrasil was transported to the New World, the settings remained. All the NPCs came to live with their last saved settings. This is why Albedo is so in love with Ainz. He made it her nature to be in love with him. Her love for him is so great that she wants to make him the sole ruler of Nazarick, determined to fight the other guardians if they were to stand in her way.

If we take the technical aspect of her behavior away and focus on the psychological aspect of her behaviour, we would find that it is very true to her character to be in love with Ainz. Even without Ainz manipulating her descriptions, as a Succubus, she was bound to flirt with her master.

Transporting to The New World made each NPC alive, and as can be seen, many of the Guardians showed their reservations toward Ainz in the beginning. This is opposite to their character descriptions, considering they were meant to serve and revere the Almighty 41 Supreme Beings.

Taking this into account, Albedo might have eventually fallen in love with Ainz.

Conclusion

Albedo is a well-written character in the world of Overlord. Her behaviour and actions follow along with her personality and make her alive as a character. Despite her fidelity to Ainz being based on his involvement in changing her character description and not her own will, her character would have felt bland without this twist. Her antics and devotion to him make the series a fun experience.
