The Haikyuu new movie hit Japanese theatres on February 16, 2024, and it brought down waves of commendation along with it. The film is yet to make an international release, but the fate of Haikyuu!! seems to have already been decided. As of now, the Haikyuu franchise is going to be wrapped up with two final films, both of which will sum up the final parts of the story and give the final stitches to the plot. And fans have been asking – When is Haikyuu Season 5 coming out?

In this article, we shall be looking at the Haikyuu new movie and wondering not only when is season 5 coming out, but if it is coming out at all.

Will there be a final season after the Haikyuu new movie?

Fans of Haikyuu!! have been waiting patiently for information regarding a possible Season 5 for the past three years and it has never been easier. Additionally, the anime ended Season 4 in 2020 with a massive cliffhanger, leaving viewers with just specials including recaps and side storylines. The official Haikyuu Twitter feed from Japan revealed in August 2022 that the series will conclude with two films instead of a complete season.

  • Most recently, the Haikyuu Festa event took place on September 24, 2023, in Tokyo Musashino Forest Sports Plaza Main Arena in Tokyo, Japan. With a footfall of over nine thousand people, the fandom embraced the official announcement of the two movies that will conclude the treasured sports anime.
  • The fans’ reactions to the announcement were however partitioned or conflicted so to speak. On the one hand, they were happy to learn that their beloved sports show would soon be made into two anime films and that in itself is a task as challenging as it gets.
  • Some, on the other hand, were dissatisfied with the fact that the remaining 100 chapters of the Haikyuu!! manga would somehow be turned into two films.

We know that the Haikyuu franchise will be summed up in the final movies, and there is no final season on the stove for now. At this crucial intersection, the major question to ask is – Is it possible to adapt a hundred chapters of the manga in the Haikyuu final films? Does the series need to be extended to a further Haikyuu Season 5 to accommodate the story? To answer these questions, we must delve further into the complexities of the adaptations.

The complexities surrounding the Haikyuu final films and the Haikyuu!! Season 5 debate

The release of the Haikyuu movie 2024 in Japan has already made international fans demand an English dubbed release across theatres and streaming platforms worldwide. Haikyuu the Movie!! Battle at the Garbage Dump has been a huge success and the second of the Haikyuu final films should also have an official announcement after the first one’s international release.

While there is a lot of story in the pipeline, covering almost five arcs and more than a hundred chapters is a humongous task that the franchise has undertaken. We must therefore understand why the Haikyuu anime final season was cancelled and why the decision to make two movies out of the remaining plot became a reality.

1. Haikyuu!! anime season 4 suffered heavily and the decision for Haikyuu final films must’ve been necessitated

We know that the Haikyuu!! Season 4 suffered heavily due to the pandemic and the anime did not really do that well. That being said, the production team was bound to make a decision – either cancel the series or sum it up in the shortest possible manner. This decision might be a consequence of budgetary restrictions, however, we never know if that will always remain the same.

If both of the Haikyuu final films do well, as the Haikyuu!! Movie Battle at the Garbage Dump proves to be a successful venture, an AoT-like phenomenon might just happen and we might receive a Haikyuu Season 5 release date in the process!

2. Haikyuu final films have to compress the source material to fit all of the remaining arcs

The source material for the Haikyuu movies will need to be condensed, and choices about what may be removed and what must be retained will need to be made. Without unduly altering the manga’s plot, the story must also let the second film follow Hinata’s voyage to Brazil. This would also allow concentrating on characters other than the two main protagonists.

But, if we are to think of the extremities, it is reasonable to assume that the two films will cover the entirety of the series, including the time-skip arc, and that in order to fit everything in, the content will be greatly condensed or even trimmed.

Will the Haikyuu final films be enough to replace the Haikyuu anime Season 5?

The Haikyuu final films are supposed to cover a significant section of the manga in the most detailed yet comprehensive manner possible. The challenge is great and the odds of a Haikyuu anime Season 5 doing better are even greater. So far, the final movies are supposed to cover the battle at the garbage dump and also Hinata’s journey to Brazil followed by his return and the Tokyo Olympics. These chapters are not just a big block of character development narratives but they also serve the purpose of exponentially bringing out the other characters in the process.

Fans and critics believe that the Haikyuu final movies might not be enough to cover the entirety of the story within such constraints of time. The sole purpose behind an anime season is to give a space for details and nuances to thrive, interact, and exist.

  • If that liberty is being snatched away from a flourishing story, the narrative is exposed to the risk of falling apart.
  • There might be several instances where the manga readers would feel that a significant section has been omitted or tampered with.
  • This would not only spark chaos but would also disprove the analogy that two films could surmise everything that an entire season or two stood for.
