Does Isekai Cheat Magician Anime incorporate the overpowered protagonist trope well?

Rin and Taichi stumble upon the mishap of a summoning spell

Isekai Cheat Magician anime has received an outrageous amount of hate from anime fans around the world, and maybe for the right reasons! This anime encapsulates the essence of the “isekai” genre perfectly, by following the basic rules of sending the MCs to an alternate dimension or a different world, if I may, and making the female lead obnoxiously overpowered, which seems to have a feminist lens, but who are we kidding here? This anime lives up to the standards of an isekai but somehow seems to take the whole genre down with itself.

Before dissing it any further, the article shall be shifted to the realm of the garbage-y fantasy world of Isekai Cheat Magician and explore how it lives up to making the protagonist overpowered and dumb at the same time!

Isekai Cheat Magician anime – a synopsis of the plot

Isekai Cheat Magician anime is based on a Japanese light novel series written by Takeru Uchida and illustrated by Nardack. The plot of Isekai Cheat Magician revolves around Nishimura Taichi and Azuma Rin, two high school students who are called to another realm by an accidental summoning spell. When they arrive in this world, they immediately face a monster and are saved by a group of adventurers traveling by. Of course, they are fortunate enough that these people turn out to be the kindest and offer the two protagonists generously.

Soon they discover that they possess immense magical power and the duo becomes an extremely strong pair of magicians. However, this leads to them being targeted by the villains, who always seem to make the mistake of underestimating their powers and are eventually defeated by this dynamic and overpowered duo.

The Isekai Cheat Magician anime is all about the overpowered protagonist trope

The trope of the overpowered” protagonist in the isekai genre is not new, but the Isekai Cheat Magician anime seems to take it to the next level by actually making this trope its entire personality. The protagonists Taichi and Rin initially shift their focus to going back home, which flames out really soon into the anime.  The Isekai Cheat Magician anime lives up to its title by actually making the MCs super powerful in an instant upon entering this new world, much like using cheat codes to gain an upper hand and being invincible against the norm.

  • Many characters who are extremely powerful in anime shows, reach that stage upon toiling hard to achieve that level of strength.
  • But, for the overpowered characters in an isekai, it is more of a given characteristic. Their power and strength shape their entire personality.
  • This tends to work out for certain shows, but in the case of this anime, we are gifted with two bland, overpowered MCs who undergo no character development throughout the entirety of 12 episodes.
  • All in all, the anime feels like a no-show, with bland characters with a lot of power and no purpose.

When we usually talk about overpowered characters, our thoughts are shifted to the likes of Gojo Satoru, Madara Uchiha, and even Asta from Black Clover upon receiving his grimoire. But, Isekai Cheat Magician anime takes it another step beyond – crafting the protagonists who have no conviction at all, making it a purposeless plot with dragged conversations altogether. This is basically an anime that doesn’t make you guess and is too predictable all the while.

Is Isekai Cheat Magician anime worth the watch?

The Isekai Cheat Magician anime overpowered trope is awfully painful to watch, but a certain section of people do seem to enjoy it. To answer the posed question simply, would be to say no. But, to get a better insight and to make a more informed decision, here are some of the reasons listed below:

One thing that can be liked about Isekai Cheat Magician

A faction of anime fans on the internet has opined their detestment toward this anime to a great extent by calling it names like ‘Isekai Shit Magician‘. They seem to dislike everything about this show apart from the only basic requirement of an anime – the animation. This anime manages to blend in a tasteless story with good-tier animation, which is basically all that the fans agree with. While the anime entirely lacks characterization, the animation has even been critically acclaimed by reviewers across various platforms.

Everything (else) that can be disliked about Isekai Cheat Magician anime

The only right or likable thing about this anime is the animation, which at times looks like JRPGs. So, in essence, there is truly nothing likable about this anime!

  • The plot of Isekai Cheat Magician anime is no different from any of the other isekai anime shows, so you’ll have a general idea of how things will play out even before it happens. Even the plot twists are predictable.
  • The plot is nonexistent and the characters are so generic that it might bore one to their guts.
  • Right when you might think that you will finally be able to witness some shounen action, all your hopes will be shattered by an episode-long conversation in the middle of the fight sequence.

This anime seems to check all the boxes for an isekai but somehow fails to hit all the spots simultaneously. This show does a pretty good job of being so inconsistent with every aspect of an anime and going wrong with literally everything.

Conclusion

The Isekai Cheat anime, in all honesty, is a disappointing watch. Although the source material is not as bad as the anime, it lacks originality and purpose, rendering it to be a very below-average piece of work. Overall, this is not a great anime to watch, with a lot of wasted potential. For more anime updates, make sure to subscribe to our newsletter at Spiel Anime!
