The shocking reason Toji Fushiguro chose his enemy to protect his son

The shocking reason Toji Fushiguro chose his enemy to protect his son

In Jujutsu Kaisen, Toji Fushiguro remains a paradox, a sorcerer marked by contradictions. He loved his son Megumi deeply, yet seemingly abandoned him to the clutches of the Zenin clan, his sworn enemies. However, amidst his final breaths, Toji took an unexpected turn, entrusting Megumi’s fate not to the Zenins, but to his archrival, Satoru Gojo. This seemingly irrational act begs the question: why would Toji place his beloved son in the hands of the very man who killed him?

To understand Toji’s decision, we must first grapple with the man’s personal issues. While initially appearing as a greedy and selfish man, Toji had spent most of his life in poverty despite being born in a family as prestigious as the Zenins. Toji had always been subject to the corrupt hierarchical system of the Zenin and discriminated against other members of the family for not having a curse power.

His wife’s passing had instilled in him a fierce protectiveness, a desire to shield his son from the harsh realities he himself faced. However, his own pride and distrust of the Zenin clan, who had ostracized him, prevented him from openly claiming Megumi.

A deal With Naobito

Thus, the deal with Naobito Zenin was born. This agreement, initially presented as a temporary custody to assess Megumi’s potential, was Toji’s twisted way of ensuring his son’s future.  As per the deal, Naobito, the head of the Zenin clan were to offer him 10 million yen if Megumi showed any sign of possessing the inherited technique of the Zenin clan (which typically show up at the age of 5 or 6).  Yet, it was also a gamble laced with despair. He knew the Zenins’ hunger for power and feared Megumi would merely become another pawn in their ruthless game.

This fear reached a boiling point as Toji faced his mortality. Recognizing the mistake he’d made, desperation clawed at him. He couldn’t stomach the thought of Megumi falling prey to the Zenins’ manipulation. In a bid for salvation, he confided in Gojo, the most unlikely of saviors.

While seemingly illogical on the surface, Gojo offered an unexpected haven. Gojo and the Zenin never got along due to their inter clan issues. Satoru Gojo was the most powerful of his clan, he possessed the Six Eyes, and he was a formidable barrier against the Zenins. His own interest in fostering strong jujutsu users provided Megumi with an alternative path. Additionally, Toji might have recognized a sliver of kindness in Gojo, a trait absent in the coldblooded Zenins.

  • Toji also knew the brutal realities of the jujutsu world.
  • When death approached Toji he realized the dangers that lay in the shadows of inherited technique, the ruthlessness of the Zenin clan, and the potential for Megumi to become another pawn in their twisted game.

Toji’s final act, entrusting Megumi to Gojo, was not a betrayal, but an act of love. He saw in Gojo Satoru, despite their rivalry, an unprecedented power, an outsider who could protect Megumi from the clutches of the very system that had destroyed him.

The name Megumi, meaning “blessing,” carries a heavy weight in this context. It serves as a reminder of Toji’s final hope, his desperate wish for a better future for his son. In entrusting Megumi to Gojo, Toji placed his faith not only in his strength but also in his ability to guide Megumi towards a path of his own making, one free from the shackles of vengeance and the darkness that consumed Toji himself.

Conclusions

Toji’s decision, fraught with desperation, continues to reverberate through Megumi’s life in Jujutsu Kaisen anime. While it secured his immediate safety, it also unleashed a dangerous game of power and manipulation. As Megumi navigates this treacherous landscape, one thing remains clear: his father’s legacy, a cocktail of love, regret, and a gamble taken in the face of death, will forever shape his destiny.
