Will One Punch Man Season 3 be animated by the author’s personal studio?

One punch man

For the last couple of years, the anime community has been buzzing about One Punch Man Season 3, thanks to the stunning promo art by Oath Kubota and the ongoing joke that Studio MAPPA is on a mission to animate every major franchise. But hold your horses! Yusuke Murata, the genius behind One Punch Man, decided to drop a bombshell.

He’s opened his very own animation studio called “Village.” That’s right, folks, he’s building his anime empire. Now the question lies in whether Murata sensei, is going to put up One Punch Man for adoption yet again? or if there is a chance that he will bring it home for good and give it the production quality that we fans are sure of he can execute.

One Punch Man and it’s Confusing Production

Newcomer anime enthusiasts are well acquainted with the groundbreaking impact of One Punch Man’s 1st season, which not only revolutionized animation standards in the industry but also faithfully translated the exceptional illustrations crafted by the universally renowned perfectionist, Yusuke Murata. This was only made possible due to the efforts of yet another legendary name in the industry “Studio Madhouse“.

The controversy surrounding One Punch Man escalated when Season 2 was announced, and the intellectual property seemingly transitioned to J.C. Staff. Despite J.C. Staff being a reputable studio with a rich industry history dating back to the mid-90s, Season 2 faced significant criticism.
  • Season 2’s attempt at maintaining a higher production value, was like watching a hero fight crime with a spaghetti noodle, with the budget for the sauce being spilled all over the place.
  • The animation quality took a hit, and the overall polish felt more like an epileptic’s worst nightmare.

To this day, One Punch Man Season 2 remains the industry’s equivalent for pineapple pizza, which remains a guilty pleasure for many, yet everyone else hates it all the same.

The elusive One Punch Man Season 3

it’s been over 3 years since the last mention of One Punch Man season 3, and any major news regarding its production remains unknown to the majority of the anime populace such as: –

  • We still lack a proper release date, with many speculating it to be stretched till fall 2024 or even Winter 2025 when considering its relative silence regarding its supposed summer 2024 release window.
  • Despite numerous insider leaks suggesting the possibility, it remains uncertain whether Studio MAPPA will indeed take charge of the production for One Punch Man Season 3. While we wouldn’t put it past MAPPA to yet again enable their animators’ caffeine addiction with a brand new contract, the prospect of handling One Punch Man seems a tad out of their usual realm.

Expanding on our stance concerning MAPPA’s potential involvement, we contend that, although One Punch Man might appear as an enticing project, MAPPA is more inclined to prioritize salvaging its already dwindling reputation. The studio seems reluctant to risk facing a more severe backlash from the vocal One Punch Man community if the production were to go awry once more. Which is likely a 90/10 scenario for the studio, almost like a cheat code for risk-averse gamblers.

Yusuke Murata’s Village

Despite primarily being a Mangaka, Murata sensei has dipped his toes into the animation sector. He contributed to animated specials for both One Punch Man and Eyeshield 21, which, though less polished than their big-budget counterparts, retained that distinctive Murata charm, setting them apart from typical low-budget shorts.

But hold on to your capes, folks! Murata has thrown himself headfirst into the anime cosmos with his Studio Village and is planning to release his very own original series Zaiyuki as his industry debut. The big question looming is whether he’ll consider handling One Punch Man Season 3 in-house. This prospect is very complicated because of two major factors: –

  • The prospect of Murata sensei handling One Punch Man Season 3 in-house might not materialize anytime soon, particularly with his fledgling Studio Village still finding its footing in the vast landscape of the animation industry. It’s evident that Murata’s main objective with this new venture is to offer an anime platform for his fresh, original ideas, rather than merely riding the coattails of his existing creations.
  • Given Murata sensei’s commitment to delivering polished content, the release of One Punch Man Season 3 could be a distant dream, possibly stretching beyond the realm of feasibility, with a timeframe of more than half a decade being an unrealistic window

The production studio for One Punch Man Season 3 is currently uncertain and remains a topic of speculation until any official announcements are made. Regardless of whether Studio Village decides to take on the project or not, there is undeniable excitement surrounding Murata Sensei’s new venture, and the community eagerly wishes him success in his endeavors.
