The will of D refers to an as-of-yet unexplained occurrence of the initial ‘D’ in certain individuals’ names. It was first revealed by Doctor Kureha, back when Gol D. Roger’s name was actually censored by the government as ‘Gold’ Roger. Even though the Government seems to be uneasy about the Will of D, very few people seem to be aware of it.

D seems to be a title passed down through generations in a family, as mentioned by Jaguar D. Saul. Many holders of the initial themselves seem to be unaware of its origins and meaning, while some people like Luffy don’t even bother about it.

Connections to the Void Century

There are a lot of myths and legends surrounding the Will of D within the world of One Piece. While the true purpose of the D is unknown, one common trait among those who have the will of D seems to be the desire for freedom and an absolute belief in shaping their own destiny, which could be potentially traced back to the Void Century.

After returning from Laugh Tale, the Roger Pirates seem to have learned the true meaning behind the Will of D. This further emphasizes the fact that the D clan was closely intertwined with the Void Century. Robin also seems to be very interested in the Will of D, a trait that she might’ve picked up from the Scholars at Ohara.

Theories and Speculations

The D are known to be the natural enemies of Gods, aka Celestial Dragons. This hints at the Ds playing a huge role during the events of the Void century.

  • Donquixote Rosinante, a former Celestial Dragon mentioned how the Will of D was used as a scare tale to discipline children among the Celestial Dragons.
  • It is often said that “D will once again bring forth a storm”. This implies that the Will of D has the capacity to create great levels of change and revolutionize the world. We see this exhibited by Luffy in almost every arc.
  • It seems some families, like the Trafalgar family, chose to hide the D in their name for unknown reasons.
  • Another trait of their Ds seems to be their sheer tenacity and rebellious will that allows them to smile even in the face of death.
  • While the actual meaning of the letter D is unknown, during the post-war arc, one of the Gorosei mentioned that “D” means Danger.

Known Carriers

So far, thirteen carriers of the Will of D have been revealed. all of whom have played key roles in the story often resulting in various kinds of world-altering consequences. The most recent addition to the list were the members of the Nefertari family, as per the recently surfaced One Piece 1085 Spoilers.

  • Monkey D. Luffy
  • Monkey D. Garp
  • Monkey D. Dragon
  • Jaguar D. Saul
  • Portgas D. Ace
  • Portgas D. Rouge
  • Gol D. Roger
  • Trafalgar D. Water Law
  • Marshal D. Teach
  • Rocks D. Xebec
  • Nefertari D. Lily
  • Nefertari D. Cobra
  • Nefertari D. Vivi

The Will of D doesn’t seem to be confined by boundaries of morals or justice, and the carriers aren’t inherently ‘Good’ or ‘Evil’. Throughout the course of the series, most of the major events seem to be centered around a carrier of the Will of D.

Most of the carriers of D tend to be in some sort of leadership role, have kingly ambitions, or hold influential positions. The Will of D doesn’t seem to reflect the strength and abilities of an individual, but rather the sheer convictions that one holds. For more info on One Piece Chapter 1085 spoilers, check this out.
