Look Back Anime Trailer breakdown
The anime trailer features beautiful animation which is reminiscent of painting strokes. The vibrant and colorful appearance gives more impact to the brief darker scenes around the end.
The music carries a melancholic feel to it and the voice actors have done a great job depicting the characters. Let’s gloss over some of the prominent moments from the manga, so beware of spoilers:
- The trailer begins with the scene where Fujino’s classmates are laughing at her comics and appreciating her talent. The self-sufficient look on Fujino’s face is adorable, yet conceited.
- We get to see glimpses of the different stages of her journey from when she meets Kyomoto for the first time or devotes all her time to improving.
Overall the trailer is highly sentimental and prepares one for what’s coming their way once the whole thing pans out.
Cast and Crew
- Kiyotaka Oshiyama is the man behind the direction and writing of the series.
- Studio Durian is looking over the animation production with Haruka Nakamura as the incharge of the musical score.
- We’ll get to hear Yuumi Kawai as Fujino and Mizuki Yoshida as Kyomoto.
An artistic process
The protagonists of Look Back, Fujino and Kyomoto when they come together make Fujimoto. Many fans have speculated that Look Back is a record of the two artistic sides of Fujimoto. Throughout the story, we get to see how the manga-making process can be quite tedious.
Everytime Fujino pulls back or resigns from the process, she’s given a reason to tap back in. This reason is the expectation of her reader. Fujino also faces the setback of not being good enough no matter how hard she tries. Despite practicing day and night wholeheartedly, there’s always someone ahead of her.
That and her attempt to restrain Kyomoto when she shares her dream are a reflection of the negative parts of her character. Within a short story, Fujimoto was able to convey multiple ideas and a layered experience.
Then, how did the Look Back Manga catch the fire of controversy when it was first released?

Look Back is a one-shot manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto which was released on Shonen Jump Plus on July 19, 2021. Soon after the manga was released, the official Twitter handle of the manga-reading platform made an announcement regarding some changes that’ll be made to the contents of the manga. These changes included:
- A section of the manga where the man who visits Kyomoto’s University mentions that he was having paranoid episodes. This particular part had to be removed to avoid discrimination against those who suffer from mental illnesses. Portrayal of a murderer who suffered from Schizophrenia could potentially fuel the stigma around mental illnesses.
- Additionally the mention of plagiarism by the man to Kyomoto was also removed. This scene draws a direct connection to the Kyoto Animation incident, as the man behind the arson attack also mentioned plagiarism, as reported by witnesses.
These problematic aspects were brought to attention by the readers. Shueisha was quick to act upon the feedback to avoid any further controversies.
