Fern and Stark – Current Relationship
Currently, in the anime, the two are simply members of the party going out for an amazing adventure to Aureole, where Frieren will meet Himmel again. Throughout the journey, both of them have come to trust each other and become very close. Fern acts as the mature and reasonable part of the party, while Stark acts out of compassion. Both of them have an amazing synergy, as he takes on the frontal charge and she backs him up with her magic.
Will Fern and Stark end up together?
In the recent episode 12 of the show, it was clearly hinted that Fern has affection toward Stark, and these are surely to be romantic ones and not platonic ones. I will explain why.
- She was seemingly hesitant to let him carry her master. She attributes it to thinking that he is a perv, however, deep inside it might be jealousy, since she very well knows that he is not the kind of man to do something like that.
- When Frieren revealed that it was his birthday, she got visibly distressed due to her lack of preparation to treat him to something.
- Her expressions when he was watching the clouds and when he was retelling his past showed compassion and kindness toward him, one that said let me help you, you can ease up to me.
These signs might seem a bit ambiguous, however, since the time they were introduced to each other, we have seen them getting closer and closer with each episode. Such a build-up only indicates a potential romantic direction. If that was not all, I believe Fern and Stark in Frieren’s current party imitate Himmel and her relationship in her previous party. This makes sense as Himmel outwardly showed that he was interested in her, something that we will probably soon see from Fern.
Another indication of them ending up together would be how the opening credits show us everything that we will come to experience in the show. There is one scene where Frieren and Himmel are seen together, this is clearly an expression of their feelings for each other. Similarly, Fern and Stark have also received one such scene in the opening, greatly increasing the chances of them ending up together.
There is still time in the anime for our question to be answered, however, it isn’t any better in the manga. In the manga, Fern forces Stark to take her out on a date, being the first out of the two to realize that she loves him. He has yet to realize his own feelings toward her, but it shouldn’t be too long with her taking the charge. Since that interaction, they have not made much of an appearance. This leaves fans at a crossroad:
- Either to accept that they ended up together offscreen.
- Or to wait till the mangaka brings them back and we get official approval of their relationship from their interaction.

Long answer short, they do end up together, in our hearts they already have. We simply have to wait till they properly show it onscreen. With such a dynamic pair and sweet relationship, patience kinda runs out to see them get together.
