Himmel was in Love with Frieren: All the signs visited
To cut it short, Himmel was definitely in love with her. Completely head over heels for her. While he recruited her for her prowess, he slowly fell in love with her because of how she was. Despite not understanding it at that point, Frieren was a kind individual, who noticed all the little things. Himmel made sure to appreciate all that she did, as his way of showing his love to her.
He knew that Elves had no desire for reproduction and hence lacked the faculty to desire romantic intimacy. As such, he never explicitly expressed his emotions but did so in the little things that she noticed but only realized later on.
- He would always compliment her for the spells she had been collecting so far. Even when those spells are nothing special, he would compliment her for knowing it and would appreciate the spell she learnt.
- He wished to take her to a land where he could show her Blue Mood Weed from his homeland, which are his favorite flowers.
- He observed every small bits about her, even remembering what kind of food she likes, down to what she would prefer in any given mood.
- He was knocked out when she used her womanly charms. Mind you that Eisen and Heiter were completely fine. This kind of reactions is mostly seen from someone who is romantically interested in the other [at least in anime].
- He took her to buy some accessories, letting her choose whichever one she liked. Out of pure coincidence, she happened to choose a ring which had the design of a mirrored lotus, which signified eternal love in the language of flowers. He instantly realized it and got on his knees to put it on her finger.
All of these moments are tiny hints that Himmel was indeed completely in love with her. Another way we are shown this would be how he remained a bachelor in his life, awaiting for the day when he would meet her again.
Himmel and Frieren: Was it possible for them to be together?
Himmel realized it very early that a future together with Frieren was out of the picture. She was an elf, a being whose longetivity surpassed humans’ by a multifold. She belonged from a race that could not comprehend time in the same manner as humans and never prioritised relationships in their lives.
For humans, bonds meant everything, mainly because they had such short lives. Himmel knew that Frieren never looked at time the same way and asking her to settle with him would hold her nature back. Not that she would say yes in the first place. His death served as an eye-opening moment for her to realize that time is short for humans, which makes them cherish each moments like it is their last.
So did Himmel, he relished each and every moment with her and at the end, when he died, he was together with her. In a way, with how the story has progressed, one could say that Himmel and Frieren did get together, in Frieren’s mind and heart, they are now together.
