However, recent reports of overworked staff and a shortage of experienced animators have cast a shadow over the studio’s otherwise impressive track record. This article explores the potential impact of MAPPA’s staff situation on five eagerly upcoming anime projects by MAPPA Studio.

MAPPA studio has recently been accused by few of its animators and other staffs working on the Jujutsu Kaisen season 2’s upcoming episodes, for having unrealistic and hectic work schedule. according to certain tweets, MAPPA Studio has been forcing its employees to sign NDAs and perpetuating them to work on a schedule that is impossible to achieve.  This recent staff controversy has been hindering both its reputation and work.  While flagship series like Attack on Titan were completed unaffected, concerns loom over the timely release and quality of upcoming projects.

Top 5 other Anime projects that can be impacted by Mappa’s staff situation

1. Bucchigiri?!

Bucchigiri?! Is based on the original work of Taku Kishimoto. Directed by Hiroko Utsumi, it is projected to release in January 2024 on a global scale via Crunchyroll. It promises a sports anime experience blending basketball, rugby, and dodgeball. The series, currently being  animated by MAPPA, introduces a group of high school students forming a team for a unique sport.

It is possible that this anime may get delayed due to the ongoing staff issue at MAPPA studio, if not a hasty release may also cause compromises in animation quality. Limited resources may challenge the studio in maintaining the expected high animation standards, potentially affecting the production timeline.

2. Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku Season 2

The success of Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku season 1 was so high that MAPPA released an official  statement on its finale, declaring the making of season 2. It will be a continuation of the dark fantasy narrative of Gabimaru, a condemned ninja seeking immortality. Although the release date is awaiting announcement, the excitement created by MAPPA prematurely will create a pressure by fans expecting its early release. If MAPPA is expecting to release it in 2024, it will be biting more than it can chew.

3. Lazarus

Lazarus is based on a futuristic utopian society where a cure-all drug is discovered by Dr. Skinner, this drug is later revealed to be an actual poison with only Skinner having the link to its Vaccine.  Lazarus will be premiering in the United States through AdultSwim with 13 episodes. Although the production staff hinted earlier that it will be releasing in 2024, there is no official announcement regarding the release date. With the current situation in MAPPA Studio, we can only expect it to be delayed further.

4. Yuri!!! on Ice the Movie: Ice Adolescence

This latest addition to the Yuri!!! On ice franchise is based on the story by Sayo Yamamoto. It was supposed to be released in 2020, but it was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Already being delayed way ahead of its schedule, even now there is no official update about its release date. As per the note published on the official website of Yuri!!! on Ice the Movie: Ice Adolescence by MAPPA studio, the movie has not yet reached the stage where the release date can be disclosed. Which hints that maybe the movie won’t be released even in 2024, with the current stafff situation,  it may be delayed till 2025.

5. Zombie Land Saga the Movie

Continuing the story of undead idol singers, Zombie Land Saga the Movie is animated by MAPPA studio. Despite lacking a confirmed release date, MAPPA’s staff shortage introduces concerns about potential impacts on the production or animation quality. Limited resources may challenge the studio in meeting the demands of Zombie Land Saga fans eagerly awaiting the continuation on the big screen.

Conclusion

While MAPPA Studio has not addressed the overworked and overscheduled staff concerns until now, we are expecting it to resolve these concerns as soon as possible. Unless these issues are resolved, the anime projects will keep getting delayed.  Although creating a high quality anime takes time, it should never come at the cost of the mental health of the animators. Even if the projects get delayed, staffing constraints must be solved.
